How to Use the Charades Generator
The tool above is the whole game engine - there is nothing else to set up. Here is exactly how it works:
- Pick a category (Animals, Movies & TV, Actions & Verbs, and six more) or leave it on "All categories" for a full mix.
- Pick a difficulty - Easy, Medium, Hard, or "All levels" to mix things up.
- Click "Get a word." A random word or phrase appears instantly, along with its category and difficulty.
- Act it out for your team, silently, using only gestures and body language - no talking, no pointing at real objects.
- Click "Get a word" again for the next round. The generator tracks which words it has already shown you in the current filter and will not repeat one until every word in that filter has appeared once.
What's Inside the Word Bank
This generator draws from 172 hand-picked words and phrases, organized into 9 categories so you can steer the game toward whatever your group enjoys most:
- Animals - Elephant, Penguin, Octopus, Giraffe, and more classic mime-friendly creatures
- Actions & Verbs - Swimming, Cooking, Riding a bike, Flying a kite
- Movies & TV - Titanic, Star Wars, Frozen, Harry Potter, and other widely recognized titles
- Objects - Umbrella, Toaster, Bicycle, Piano
- Occupations - Firefighter, Astronaut, Detective, Veterinarian
- Food & Drink - Pizza, Sushi, Birthday cake, Cotton candy
- Sports & Games - Basketball, Bowling, Karate, Chess
- Emotions & Expressions - Happy, Confused, Embarrassed, Exhausted
- Places & Travel - Beach, Airport, Volcano, Space station
Why Use a Random Word Generator Instead of a List?
You could just print a list of charades words and pass it around, but a generator solves problems a static list never fixes:
- No peeking ahead - with a printed list, the next actor can see every upcoming word. A generator reveals one word at a time.
- No repeats until every word has been used once in your chosen category and difficulty, so nobody gets stuck with the same easy word twice in a row.
- No arguing over fairness - the pick is random, so no one can steer the game toward words they know their team will guess quickly.
- Instant variety - switch categories or difficulty mid-game without needing a second list.
- Works on any device with a browser - phone, tablet, laptop, or a shared screen during a video call.
Difficulty Levels Explained
Not every group wants the same challenge level, so every word in the bank is tagged Easy, Medium, or Hard. Filter by whichever fits your players, or leave it on "All levels" for a natural mix.
- Easy - concrete, single-idea words most players recognize instantly (Dog, Pizza, Happy, Elephant). Great for young kids or a group that is brand new to charades.
- Medium - still concrete, but requiring a bit more acting or a specific scene (Astronaut, Sushi, Flying a kite). Good for family game nights and mixed-age groups.
- Hard - multi-word titles, abstract emotions, or less common references (The Wizard of Oz, Embarrassed, Sumo wrestling). Best for experienced players who want a real challenge.
Perfect for Every Occasion
Because it is free, requires no sign-up, and works instantly on any device, this generator fits almost any get-together:
- Birthday parties - keep guests of every age entertained without any prep
- Family game nights - switch between Easy and Hard rounds as kids and adults take turns
- Team-building events - a quick, no-cost icebreaker for coworkers
- Holiday celebrations - perfect filler activity between courses at a Thanksgiving or Christmas gathering
- Virtual game nights - share your screen on Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet and everyone sees the word together
- Date nights - two people, no teams needed, just alternate turns acting and guessing
- Sleepovers and classroom games - a screen-free-feeling activity that still uses a phone as the only prop
How to Play Charades: Quick Rules
If your group has never played, here is the short version. For house-rule variations, most groups adapt these freely.
- Split into two teams of at least two players each (four or more players total works best).
- One player from the active team clicks "Get a word" (privately, so the other team does not see it) and acts it out silently for their own teammates.
- No talking, no sound effects, and no pointing at real objects in the room - only gestures, body language, and facial expressions.
- Teammates shout guesses out loud. The round ends the moment someone guesses correctly, or when your chosen round timer runs out.
- Standard hand signals speed things up: hold up fingers for the number of words in a phrase, cup a hand behind your ear for "sounds like," or frame a rectangle in the air for "movie."
- Rotate the acting player every round so everyone gets a turn, and switch which team goes first.
Standard Hand Signals Worth Learning
Most charades groups eventually adopt a small shared vocabulary of hand signals so the actor does not have to explain the format out loud (which would break the no-talking rule anyway). Learning these ahead of time speeds every round up:
- Hold up fingers to show how many words are in the phrase (four fingers = four words)
- Hold up fingers on one hand, then tap your other forearm, to show how many syllables the current word has
- Cup a hand behind your ear to signal "sounds like" - the next gesture rhymes with or resembles another word
- Pinch your thumb and forefinger close together to signal a short or small word
- Frame a rectangle in the air with your hands to signal "movie"
- Open your hands like a book to signal "book"
- Point to yourself to signal a person's name or a famous individual
Tips for a Better Game
A few small habits make a big difference in how much fun a round of charades is:
- Set a time limit (try the built-in 30, 60, or 90 second timer above) so no single round drags on.
- Start on Easy for the first few rounds to warm the group up, then move to Medium or Hard once everyone is comfortable.
- Break long phrases into parts - act out each word separately before showing how they connect.
- Exaggerate everything. Subtle acting is the single most common reason a team fails to guess in time.
- Tell a short story instead of miming a single item - a scene gives your team more clues to work with than one static pose.
- Keep score if you want extra competition, but charades works just as well as a purely social, score-free activity.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
A handful of small errors show up in almost every new group's first few rounds. Watching for these speeds everyone up fast:
- Talking. This is the single most common slip. Remember: no words, no sound effects, not even a whispered hint.
- Pointing directly at real objects in the room. If the word is "lamp," pointing at an actual lamp is against the rules; mime holding or using one instead.
- Moving too subtly. Small, careful gestures are far harder to read from across a room than big, exaggerated ones.
- Giving up on a word too early. Some of the best rounds start slow and click into place once the actor breaks the word into smaller parts.
- Skipping the category signal. Announcing whether the word is a movie, a person, an object, or an action first narrows down every guess that follows.
- Forgetting to rotate who acts. Everyone should get a turn, even if one player happens to be especially good at it.
Sample Words by Difficulty
Not sure how the difficulty filter feels in practice? Here is a small, real sample from the word bank at each level, with a quick note on why it earned that rating:
- Easy - "Elephant." A single, universally recognized animal with an obvious signature gesture (the trunk).
- Easy - "Pizza." A concrete food item almost every player can mime in one or two moves.
- Medium - "Astronaut." Recognizable, but needs a short sequence of gestures (floating, a helmet, planting a flag) rather than one static pose.
- Medium - "Flying a kite." An action rather than an object, so the actor has to build a small scene.
- Hard - "The Wizard of Oz." A three-word title with no single obvious gesture, forcing the actor to break it into parts or act out a specific scene.
- Hard - "Embarrassed." An abstract emotion with several possible physical interpretations, making it genuinely tricky to land quickly.
This is only a sample - the full 172-word bank is only visible inside the generator itself, one random draw at a time, so the game stays a surprise.
Charades for Different Group Sizes
The generator works the same way regardless of how many people are playing - only the team structure around it needs to adjust.
- 2 players (date night): Skip teams entirely. Alternate who acts and who guesses each round, and use the timer to keep rounds brisk.
- 4-6 players (family game night): Two even teams of two or three works well. Rotate who acts so every player gets a turn before repeating.
- 8-12 players (party or team-building event): Split into two larger teams, or run three smaller teams in a round-robin so waiting time between turns stays short.
- 20+ players (big party or classroom): Break into several small teams of four to six and run parallel mini-games, each with its own device open to this generator, then compare how many correct guesses each team managed in the same number of rounds.
